Richard Parker has been teaching swimming since the early 1980's. He has developed his own unique method of teaching, The Parker Swimming Method, that reduces on the steps in learning to swim and has the result of making his students safer in the water. Richard comes to your pool from Montauk to Southampton. He also gives ocean swimming lessons. He was an ocean lifeguard for 20 years and he insists these skills are important to have before you learn to surf or enter the ocean environment! He was interviewed in an article in Newsday, last summer, about Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.

My father in Medical School and U.S. Army, 1944
Capt. John W. Parker, Jr, MD, USAF Surgeon, Marthas Vineyard, Mass. 1948
Memorial
This website is dedicated to my father, Dr. John Walter Parker, Jr., M.D., Surgeon and U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force veteran.
He taught himself how to swim, from a book. He started teaching me how to swim when I was 1 year old, in Sag Harbor/Shelter Island Sound. He taught me how to sail in our sailboat "Dancer." He taught us to skindive and was one of the first to spearfish in Shinnecock, with skindiving equipment. He gave me my first rowboat/skiff, for my birthday, when I was 9 years old. I named it the "Seawolf." I "borrowed" the Evenrude 3 1/2 horse auxilliary trolling engine off the family boat, to power my Seawolf when fishing.
My father taught me weight training on his York Weights, when I was 11 years old. He grew up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
He took my brother John, my mother Theresa, and I, family fishing and exploring, Sag Harbor to Mystic, Connecticut, in a 15 ft. fiberglass boat. We fished from almost 400 foot deep waters in The Race, Shinnecock, Gardiners Bay, The Ruins, Plum Gut, and a couple of miles off Shagwong Reef and Montauk Point in our original 16 1/2 foot, 1960's Boston Whaler.
He left, for my older brother John and myself, a legacy of the sea that persists to this day.
My older brother, John (who is now an attorney/race car driver and owns a vintage car business), ran the boat to the Cedar Point Lighthouse (and helped cut the first road to the lighthouse), was one of the first Red CrossWater Safety Instructors for East Hampton Town, surfed Ditch Plains in the 60's and now, raced sailboats, is a SCUBA Diver and still has our 1960's Boston Whaler.
My brother and I went off shore SCUBA Diving in a 15 foot fiberglass boat off The Florida Keys in 1975.
I became a Suffolk County Civil Service Ocean Lifeguard for 20 years for Southampton Town. I became a surfcast fisherman, commercial clammer, surfer, PADI SCUBA Diver and Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. I became a Red Cross Kayaking Instructor and taught myself how to "Eskimo roll" from a video. I am now learning Saltwater Flyfishing.
I started teaching swimming 30 years ago just as my father and brother taught me.
I teach swimming.
I now plan to continue the life on the water, of which my father gave me my first view.
My father passed on....
November 11, 2006.
